The Bird’s Nest Program in Bondurant, Iowa is an out-of-school time discovery center specifically devoted to children Kindergarten through 4th grade in the Bondurant Farrar Community. The program offers a series of activities devoted to the physical, emotional and social development of children. The program is designed to entertain, exercise and stimulate children while reinforcing good social skills.
Today, the kids within our community have limited options available for after school and the summer. Students, more than ever, need a safe, engaging and enriching place to go while their parents are at work. We feel it is very important to make sure that the kids have a plethora of options available to them on daily basis.
We are currently working with local stakeholders to ensure our youth are receiving adequate development, taking advantage of exceptional community programs and exploring real world experiences. Youth Development Policy and Research describes youth development as “a combination of all of the people, places, supports, opportunities, and services that young people need to be happy, healthy and successful.”
The goal of the program is to provide a number of activities to fulfill the interests of the children while still providing a secure, caring and fun environment outside of normal school hours. With our “dream” grant, we would purchase more games, sports equipment, dramatic play items, musical instruments as well as more technological items, such as computers and computer games.
The “dream” grant would make a significant impact on what the program can offer to the kids to help them with their academic performance, social skills and ongoing community involvement. After all, quality out of school time programs are just one ingredient in the recipe for success for Iowa’s youth!
