Our children are overwhelmed with opportunities to expand intellectually. Educational programs that were once offered at the high school level are now introduced to the class room in middle school, and students commonly graduate from high school with nearly a year’s worth of college credit under their belts. There are so many decisions to make in our world of too much information, and our kids are feeling the pressure! Extra curricular activities encourage kids to compete against each other and themselves…
Employers are increasingly aware that knowledge may be power, but “knowledge from college” is neither a predictor nor guarantor of success. Do our young adults have the social skills to show off their academic knowledge (IQ)? That’s where emotional intelligence (EQ) becomes important.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, understand and manage emotions. Generally speaking, EQ improves an individuals’ social effectiveness. A high EQ individual tends to be more social, open and agreeable than others.

What if our children were introduced to self knowing at an early age and encouraged to acknowledge and understand their emotions? The first step in helping to build EQ at any age is to spend time in self awareness.
Yoga is an ancient path to increased awareness; the literal translation of the word yoga is “union.” A consistent yoga practice by definition creates a union of body and mind. Simple movement and coordination of breath calms the body and soothes the nervous system; and time spent in the absence of television, cell phones, and internet give the mind a much needed break from information overload.

balance yoga lounge would like to offer free yoga classes to children, teens and especially at risk teens in Central Iowa. We plan to offer the classes at our tranquil lounge in Ankeny or on site at schools and day cares. Once children have experienced the peacefulness of a quiet mind and have learned the benefits of BEING are just as rewarding as DOING, yoga will become a primary tool for releasing stress and building empathy toward others, thus raising EQ and contributing to a balanced body, mind and spirit.
